Yarrabah Shire is the largest discrete indigenous community in Australia. Located just 10km south of Cairns by direct-line distance, but the Trinity Inlet and the Murray Prior Range separate the two geographically, making it just over 50km via road.  

The Yarrabah Microgrid Feasibility Study aims to analyse the options to showcase Yarrabah microgrid as a self-reliant, sustainable, community-based energy solution that can be replicated at other fringe-of-grid and regional and remote communities. The Microgrid Pre-Implementation report (2024) was funded as an initiative that benefited from the Queensland Government’s Queensland Microgrid Pilot Fund (QMPF).

The Project Team acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land within Yarrabah shire boundaries,  the Gunggandji and Yidinji peoples; and the area agreements developed through previous negotiations that provide clear opportunities and processes for traditional owners to be formally involved in the land planning process.  The authors also wish to acknowledge the historical people brought to Yarrabah from various locations by government policies of the past.

The work for these studies has been led by Ener-G Management Group working in collaboration with ITP Renewables, Planz Town Planning, GoHa Planning and Development and The Missing Link.
